The placement of a diffuser has a significant impact on how you experience the scent. A powerful device hidden behind a cabinet may not perform as well as a suitable model in an unobstructed spot. With a few practical choices, you help the scent disperse evenly throughout the room. Read below for the best places to position an electric scent diffuser.

The best spot for an electric scent diffuser

Choose an unobstructed electrical outlet with enough space around the device. Air must be able to circulate around the diffuser. Therefore, do not place it behind a sofa, cabinet, or heavy curtain, and never cover it. Keep the device upright and always follow the included operating and safety instructions.

Haven't chosen a suitable system yet? On the page for the electric diffuser for home and business, you can compare operation and capacity.

Pay attention to natural airflow

Gentle air movement helps distribute scent through a room. A spot where air circulates throughout the space can therefore work well. Placing it directly next to an open window, exhaust vent, or powerful fan is less favorable: the scent may quickly disappear outside or away from the desired zone.

Test your chosen spot for a few days before drawing conclusions. Walk through the room at different times as well. Temperature, open doors, and ventilation can change throughout the day.

In the living room

In the living room, choose an outlet that is not directly behind large furniture. In an open-plan kitchen and living area, the entire combined volume counts. If the diffuser is too close to a single seating area, the scent might be stronger there than elsewhere. A spot slightly further away from fixed seating areas often provides a more balanced background.

In the hallway

The hallway often defines the first olfactory impression of a home or business. A diffuser can work well here provided the outlet is unobstructed and the front door is not constantly open. If you have an open connection to the living room or stairs, account for that extra air volume when choosing the capacity.

In the bedroom

For a bedroom, a subtle scent profile is usually more pleasant than a very pronounced one. Do not place the device right next to the headboard or close to the bed. Choose an unobstructed spot at a distance and assess whether the intensity remains pleasant. Be mindful of personal sensitivities and use the device according to the instructions.

In an office, store, or hotel

In a business space, the scent must remain pleasant for a variety of people. Do not place the diffuser directly by a workstation, waiting line, or checkout counter. A spot with even air circulation can better distribute the scent throughout the room. At a shop entrance, a frequently opened door can vent a lot of fragrance; moving it slightly further inside can be more effective.

Which capacity suits the space?

Proper placement cannot fully compensate for an undersized device. Therefore, calculate the volume using length × width × height. The Ambielectric Star is designed for smaller spaces up to approximately 200 m³. The Ambielectric Plus can handle spaces up to approximately 400 m³ under suitable conditions.

Are there several closed rooms? Consider separate zones rather than one diffuser for the entire building. Scent spreads to a limited extent through closed doors.

Six spots to avoid

  • Behind a large cabinet, sofa, or other piece of furniture.
  • Under or directly against curtains and textiles.
  • Next to a window that is often open.
  • Directly under an exhaust vent or in a strong draft.
  • In a location where the device can be bumped.
  • In a position that deviates from the operating instructions.

Give scent time

An electric diffuser gradually builds up a scent experience. Therefore, do not move the device every hour. Let the fragrance disperse first, and perhaps ask someone entering from outside how strong they perceive the scent. You will eventually become accustomed to a constant fragrance yourself.

Next, choose the scent profile

Once the placement and capacity are correct, the refill determines the atmosphere. Compare fresh, fruity, floral, warm, and woody scents in the Scent Compass (GeurKompas). For unpleasant odors, there are also neutralizing formulations designed for a different purpose than standard home fragrances.
